The cave “Szachownica” is actually a complex of five caves, which was created as a result of mining limestone from one large cave. The mining activities contributed to the discovery of both the cave, which originally could have been even more than 2 km long, as well as to its devastation. The reserve comprises a system of underground corridors It is located on Krzemienna Góra, which is one of the hills of the Wieluń Upland.
